Title: Degradation of a degraded signal: How CI users cope with mispronounced speech
Abstract: Cochlear implant users are faced with recovering an intended utterance despite substantial acoustic degradation. However, mispronunciations and other non-canonical productions abound in natural speech. We investigate whether the compensatory mechanisms that CI users employ to overcome acoustic degradation are also beneficial when coping with mispronunciations, or if the double-whammy of mispronunciations and degraded acoustics overwhelm their recognition abilities.
